Graduated compression garments are effective tools to control your swelling and to prevent it from getting worse.
How do graduated compression garments work?
Graduated compression garments compress your swollen limb from the outside and prevent fluid collections. Graduated compression means that the pressure is highest at the ankle or wrist and gets lower as you move up the limb. The difference between high and low pressure ensures a fluid transport to the centre of your body. Compression garments enhance the action of the muscle pump and thereby improve fluid drainage.
In lipoedema patients the compression garments have an anti-inflammatory effect on the fatty tissue, mainly in combination with movement. They improve blood circulation and reduce oxidative stress. Therefore, compression therapy in those patients probably reduces the pain caused by the inflammatory processes and a lack of oxygen in the fatty tissue.
Types of compression garments
You can choose between different types of compression garments. The compression garments need to have the correct size, fit, and compression class for an optimal therapeutic result. You should wear them throughout the day or even overnight if they are specifically designed for night-time wear. Therefore, your compression garments need to be both comfortable and effective.
You can select different styles and garments for different parts of your body. They are available as ‘made-to-measure’ or ‘ready-to-wear’ products.
Compression garments for lymphoedema
There are two main categories of compression garments: Flat-knit or Circular-knit.
Flat-knit compression garments adapt to individual shapes. Their material is stiffer and provides sufficient pressure on the tissue to reduce swellings.
Circular-knit compression garments are not recommended for lymphoedema patients. Their material is more elastic, and therefore may not reduce your swelling sufficiently. They may also settle into skin folds, causing painful constrictions.

Compression garments for lipoedema
Flat-knit compression garments are preferable for lipoedema: they are more comfortable, seem to be more effective and adapt to changes in the size of your limb. Depending on the extent of your lipoedema, there are different styles of compression garments, such as stockings, leggings, or panties. Your individual condition determines what kind of garment and which compression class are required.
