In summer, warm weather often leaves us wanting dishes that are light and fresh. This makes it easier to stick to a nutritionally balanced diet which is especially important when you have lymphoedema or lipoedema. We want to share some healthy alternatives to alcoholic drinks and barbecued food that will satisfy your guests, too.
Get started – Healthy Summer Dinner
Instead of steak with barbecue sauce, why not offer your guests grilled fish with green asparagus or other seasonal vegetables? Seasoned with fresh herbs and accompanied by lemon and baked potatoes, you've got a balanced combination of non-processed food that is rich in protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates. By mixing watermelon, cucumber, and feta cheese, you can also offer a quick salad on the side that can be topped with balsamic vinegar and pine nuts.

Next Step – Alcohol-Free Drinks
Many people enjoy having an alcoholic drink when socializing with family and friends. However, alcohol stimulates the kidneys to pass more fluid and causes the blood vessels to relax and expand. Both put extra pressure on your lymphatic system which may increase swelling and the feeling of heaviness. Therefore, alcohol-free alternatives like the seasonal option below are a healthier choice. Remember, you might also be catering for guests who are driving, as well as for the ones who are choosing to either drink less (or no alcohol) for a variety of other reasons.
Add the following ingredients in a cocktail glass and enjoy!
- Assorted melon balls
- 2 spoons of fruity sorbet (lemon, raspberry, or other seasonal fruits)
- Fresh mint leaves
- Sparkling water
Now that you’ve planned the dinner and the drinks, you're almost ready to go.
Finally – Get Dressed!
