Current research discusses the connection between physical activity, healthy nutrition, and the positive effect of recognizing environmental aspects in general. Regular movement or exercise and a balanced diet are essential pillars in treating lymphoedema and lipoedema. They can also improve our well-being.
Cardiovascular exercise such as walking, light jogging, or cycling is recommended for patients with lymphoedema and lipoedema. These options are also sustainable because they don’t require much equipment to get started. You can simply step outside, get some fresh air, and start moving. Many manufacturers now offer sportswear made of sustainable material or use recycled plastic to make running shoes.
Exercising outdoors also creates awareness in our mind about protecting nature. A long walk in the woods is the perfect way to calm down, practice mindfulness, and improve our well-being. There are even global initiatives such as the Global Action Plan on Physical Activity launched by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2019, with the goal of creating an active society and public green spaces.
Balanced nutrition for those with lymphoedema or lipoedema includes wholegrain carbohydrates, plant-based protein sources, healthy fats, and fruits and vegetables. Avoiding processed food is recommended because it often has a higher carbon footprint than unprocessed food. This is especially the case when you focus on local and seasonal products. Plant-based alternatives to meat are growing in popularity as well. Besides tofu, tempeh, or seitan, you can also choose products made of lupin protein, green spelt, beans, or pea protein. If you have the chance, local markets are the perfect place to buy seasonal products, support local farmers and get inspiration for new recipes. There are several online sources that provide information on seasonal fruits, vegetables, locally grown cereals and plant-based alternatives.
Overall well-being is not necessarily related to income and property. Other factors such as meaningful relationships and a sense of belonging seem to be important, too. A community of like-minded people who also deal with the challenges of living with lymphoedema or lipoedema can therefore contribute to sustainable well-being. A platform like LymphConnect is a great way to connect with others!
