Denise Hardy

With a background in palliative care, lymphology has been the focal point of Denise’s nursing career for the last 30 years. Having set up numerous lymphoedema clinics, she established Kendal Lymphology Centre in 2005. This independent clinic provides NHS care in the northwest of England with facilities for prevention, treatment and training. It aims to offer support, education and appropriate management to patients and healthcare professionals. Over 3,000 patients, suffering from all pathologies (including lipoedema and children), have been seen since it opened in 2005.

Denise is a Trustee/Nurse Advisor to the Lymphoedema Support Network and a Nurse Consultant to Lipoedema UK. Working closely with the British Lymphology Society (co-chair 2000-2001), she assists on many projects to secure on-going and equitable funding for those with lymphoedema. On behalf of the Children’s Lymphoedema Special Interest Group (CLSIG), she helps facilitate the Lymphaletics event; a day of fun, exercise and education for children suffering with lymphoedema and their families.

Having worked with compression garment manufacturers, Denise has developed expert knowledge in compression, an essential element for lymphoedema treatment. She strives to improve compression garment choice and provision.

Denise’s dedication and contribution to lymphology was recognised recently as she was awarded the British Journal of Nursing Chronic Oedema Nurse of the Year award in March 2019.

Being lucky enough to be based in the Lake District, walking and cycling are ever-important recreational activities. Bee keeping has become another keen hobby, alongside gardening and baking with her increasing brood of grandchildren.
